Abandoned Tents Find a New Home

Fife Coast and Countryside Trust (FCCT) saw an upsurge in abandoned camping equipment during the summer of 2021. Over just one weekend in August our Maintenance Team recovered four tents and associated equipment from the Fife Coastline. However, FCCT are turning a negative into positive by upcycling camping equipment when possible and passing it on to responsible users.

Campers may not be aware that abandoning camping equipment in this way is not only littering but can also trigger searches for individuals who may have got into difficulty. Fife Coast & Countryside Trust expects all campers to take their camping equipment home with them and not to litter the countryside.

We are delighted to announce that Sandra Smith, Principal Teacher of Nurture at Glenrothes High School collected 2 tents and a sleeping bag for future use from Tom Quayle, FCCT’s, Access & Recreation Manager.

Tom commented, ‘We are delighted to pass on the camping equipment for future use rather than disposing of it to landfill and we look forward to building links with Glenrothes High School and working with staff and pupils to create a generation of responsible campers.’

Sandra Smith, who runs an outdoor learning club and a nurture group at Glenrothes High School said, ‘We are delighted to be gifted the tents and sleeping bag, we look forward to learning about responsible camping. Once Covid settles down we plan to take pupils on some overnight camping trips next year.’
