I was raised in a field study centre in the south of Portugal and have environmental conservation in my blood. In my early career I achieved success in sales and marketing positions before returning to the charity sector as the Development Director of IUCN’s Species Survival Commission. I spent five years in this role from 2009, raising the profile of, and support for, biodiversity loss. I worked particularly on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and the urgent need to address alarming declines that were evident across many species groups.

In 2014 I moved with my family to St Helena Island in the South Atlantic to become the Director of the local National Trust. The organisation was responsible for protecting and promoting the built, cultural, and natural heritage of the small British Overseas Territory that is best known as the place of Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile and eventual death.

In 2019 I arrived in Scotland to run the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust. I have shaped the organisation so that it can address the needs of the natural environment and local communities in a way that is sustainable for the long-term. Under my leadership FCCT formed its mission of ‘Connecting Environment and People’.
