Fife’s Blue Space 
A walk along the coast, a seat by a pond, even a sea-view from a window can all have significant benefits for our health and well-being. People have known this for centuries and doctors in Victorian times even prescribed “sea air” as a cure for an amazing variety of ailments.
Over the last decade, this common knowledge has been backed up by solid scientific research. It’s something to do with water. Even fish tanks have been shown to have positive effects on heart-rate, blood pressure and mood, with or without the fish!
What is it about water that has the capacity to calm us down and cheer us up? Is it because we are 60% water ourselves? Because we evolved in it and our lives depend on it? Water covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and 80% of the world’s people live within 60 miles of sea, lake or river.
In Fife we are all much closer to the sea than that. We have a long, accessible coastline to explore and many inland lochs, ponds and rivers to discover. Find out more about Fife’s blue spaces on our website and treat yourself to a health and well-being tonic over the holidays!
