Fife’s Public Toilets Shine Bright at the UK’s ‘Washroom Oscars’

Fife Coast and Countryside Trust’s public toilets have once again made a clean sweep at the UK’s ‘Washroom Oscars’.

The Loo of the Year awards recognise standards in ‘away from home’ washrooms. The Trust’s loos were declared the top local authority toilets in Scotland. FCCT’s in-house cleaning team were named Scotland’s best, and the toilets at Craigmead in the Lomond Hills took the award for the leading eco-friendly toilets.

The Trust manage 17 public toilets on behalf of Fife Council which consistently impress Loo of the Year judges. They retained their spot in the awards’ Champions League – among big names like Network Rail, Mitie and McDonald’s – which recognises organisations who are maintaining a consistently high standard of management.

In other categories, recognition also went to the public toilets at Aberdour Silver Sands, Harbourmaster’s House in Dysart, and to the new block at Riverside Park, Glenrothes.

All entries are judged on over 100 criteria following an unannounced visit by a Loo of the Year inspector. The judging criteria include décor, fixtures and fittings, security, air quality, signage and overall standards of cleanliness and management.

FCCT’s Head of Operations Robbie Blyth picked up the awards. He said: “Our small team work very hard to maintain the cleanliness and management standards that the public want to see and deserve. These accolades also reflect our valued partnerships with Fife Council and the Kingdom’s local communities.

“For example, such a partnership is delivering vast improvements to the public facilities – both toilets and car parking – at Aberdour Silver Sands this year. These developments will really benefit locals and visitors and hopefully we’ll see them celebrated at the Loo of the Year Awards in 2026.”
