The ruins of Balmerino Abbey are a fine example of a 13th-century Cistercian monastery. The Abbey was founded in 1229, and became a dwelling house of the lords Balmerino in 1603. The buildings are undergoing stabilisation work so cannot be entered but visitors can get good views from grounds, which contain an ancient Spanish chestnut tree, one of the oldest in the country.
