Outdoor Access

Scotland’s outdoors provides great opportunities for recreation and education, with the added benefits of enjoyment, health and well-being.

The Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 ensures everyone has access rights to most of Scotland’s outdoors, providing they behave responsibly and respectfully.

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code provides a practical guide to these responsibilities.

The Code is based on three key principles:

  • Respect the interests of other people – always act with courtesy, consideration and awareness.
  • Care for the environment – look after the places you visit and leave the land as you find it.
  • Take responsibility for your own actions – act safely and with care at all times.
