Children and adults across Fife have been capturing their deep connection with the Kingdom’s trees and woodlands in the Fife Climate Forest photo competition.
Dozens of entries were received by Climate Action Fife in the primary school, secondary school and adult categories. Fife Climate Forest is a partnership project led by Fife Council, Climate Action Fife and Fife Coast and Countryside Trust (FCCT). It’s a shared ambition to grow the number of trees, woods and forests in Fife.
Rebecca Logsdon is Community Engagement Manager for Fife Climate Forest, based at FCCT. Rebecca says: “Fife’s trees are amazing and help us connect, grow and thrive. And the competition entries reflected this. We had wonderful images of trees through the seasons, children climbing them, sitting among them and drawing them. Pictures of woodlands in towns and countryside. Animals, sculpture, rainbows, blossom and even aurora borealis!”
Colin Andrews, a photography lecturer at Napier University, and a Fife Tree Warden, was the main judge. He says: “The entries to the photo competition have captivated us. The diversity of approaches and perspectives is remarkable and a testament both to the talent within our community, and the wonderful inspiration the trees around us can bring. Thank you to all the participants for sharing their beautiful work and congratulations to our winners!”
Alison Wilson, the mum of primary school category winner Lewis Wilson, said: “It feels great to have our photo selected, especially to help promote connections between Fife’s people and nature. Lewis (age 6) absolutely loves being outdoors and learning about birds, bugs and plants, so we really appreciate the importance of a healthy local environment that people of all ages can access and enjoy.
“The Orchard in Newburgh is a good example of that – it’s a brilliant resource for the community and we’d highly recommend a visit!”
Julianne Gresty, a teacher at Milesmark Primary School, Dunfermline, said: “I’m thrilled to be runner-up with a photograph that captures one of our pupils here at Milesmark Primary School connecting with trees and nature during an outdoor learning session.
“Being recognised for this photo feels especially meaningful, as it celebrates not only the beauty of the natural world but also the importance of fostering environmental awareness in future generations.”
